This is skilled work assisting the horticulturist with the day-to-day operation of the greenhouse and the campus nursery, and the installation and maintenance of ornamental plantings on campus. Duties and responsibilities include: Seasonal color bed design and flower selection, seeding and vegetative propagation of flowers and plants for use on campus, transplanting and potting flowers and plants for campus use, and installation and maintenance of all seasonal color plantings on campus to include: soil sampling, tilling, fertilizing, planting, mulching, watering, and weeding. This position is also responsible for setting up plants for special events on an as needed basis, typically 3-4 per week. Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Education: High School Diploma or GED.
Experience: One-year experience. Possess knowledge of common varieties of flowers and plants and their care.
Abilities: Familiar with hand tools and power equipment such as tiller, gas shears, weed eater, gas edger, and lawn mower. Familiarity with operating a computer and utilizing email.
Interpersonal: Interacts with others in the work area in a manner that encourages accomplishment of work tasks and ability to work as part of a team.
Customer Service: Effectively listens and responds to customer needs and understands the role of customers in the work environment.
Communication: Listens to instructions and asks necessary questions to complete tasks. Communicates with fellow workers in a manner that allows work to be completed.
Education and Training: Minimum of a high school diploma or GED. A valid driver’s license is required. Position requires a pre-employment drug test.
Skills: Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods, often under adverse climatic conditions. Ability to understand and follow specific oral and written instructions. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with employees and others.

Preferred Qualifications

Master Gardener’s certification. Small tractor/loader experience.

Salary $14.48 minimum - $17.85 midpoint
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions

Ability to lift 50 pounds or more. Must be able to stand, walk, bend/stoop, and reach above shoulder level. Ability to perform strenuous manual tasks and able to perform physical work for extended periods-of-time. Exposure to inclement weather.
