Nature of Work

Workshop leaders meet weekly with a group of approximately fifteen students enrolled in a designated workshop course. The leader’s primary responsibility is to guide the group actively and engage in the subject material. The leader:

• Read and prepare for each weekly leaders meetings.

• Attend leaders’ meetings.

• Facilitates collaboration among group members while in the workshop session.

• Keep accurate report records of each workshop meeting as well as grade summary sheets and homework for all students enrolled in the workshop session.

• Act as coach and cheerleader as group is molded into problem solving team.

• Maintains a healthy group dynamics and productive group discussion.

• Check email, text, and phone messages at least once in each 24-hour period.

• Perform any additional duties specified by the workshop coordinator.

Required Qualifications

Successful applicant must
• have completed the CHEM course for which leadership is sought (or equivalent), with grade of B or better.

Preferred Qualifications

• Must be able to work effectively with other students.

• Be committed to the workshop program

• Maintain high ethical and professional standards.

• Demonstrated interpersonal skills to work cooperatively.

Ability to maintain focus for 1.5-2 hour duration of meetings

Notice to Applicants

New leaders are enrolled in a leadership course, XIDS 2002, What Do You Know About Leadership, for 2 hours academic credit. Part of this course consists of training to take place over a three-day period prior to the start of classes. To be a new leader you MUST be present for the complete training. Also, a half-day leaders’ “retreat” is held a few weeks into each new semester on a Friday afternoon from 2 to 5 pm.

Note: Academic records are normally checked, and instructor recommendations sought, evaluating applicants for leadership positions. You will be asked permission for your records to be examined.
